Our Pick for Best Under Desk Treadmill – the CEARTRY Walking Pad

My life is busy. I have a full time job as a computer developer, and do freelance work on the side to help cover bills. My wife stays home to raise our twin toddlers, which leaves her exhausted and empty by the time I’m done with my work. I already get up at 4:30 on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, in order to go to the gym and work out for 45 minutes. Needless to say, finding the time to get 10,000 steps in each day has been impossible. How can I possibly fit in another 3+ hours of walking into my day?

Also, as a mid-40’s parent of twin toddlers, I want to make sure that I’m doing everything in my power to be healthy for my kids while they grow. I expect to be able to run and play with them well into their teens and twenties, which means I have to work hard now.

I started seeing under desk treadmills being recommended by several fitness related people that I follow on Twitter. My concern was how useful it would be for somebody who needed to basically be at the keyboard almost 100% of their day. I mean, of course it was easy to add into your day if you were doing video calls and general office work. But as a developer, I’m always writing code and typing.

It turns out I was totally wrong with my assumptions. I read the reviews of several treadmills and walking pads, watched what people were saying on Twitter, and finally settled on the one in this post above. Since then, I easily get 5+ miles per day, most of it before my lunch break.

Since I already had an adjustable desk, I didn’t have any extra expense to consider. Basically, I raise my desk to the highest setting, then rest my arms on it with the keyboard and trackball mouse about halfway across. If you’re taller than about 5’8″, then you’ll certainly need to take your desk height into consideration.

This walking pad is supposed to be rated to 300lb. At 190lb, I’ve had no issues with it. It’s perfectly suited to my stride, and has been a perfect way for me to get the steps in. It shuts off automatically at 99 minutes, so if you plan on going longer than that, you’ll just need to restart it.

Some of the reviews for other walking pads are that they get hot after extended use, and that they’re loud. I’m happy to report that I have had neither experience with this one. I walk in my socks, and have not had any issues with it getting to hot, even up to the 99 minute mark. Also, it’s so quiet that people on my calls aren’t able to hear it. There was an issue early on with some clicking noises, but I quickly figured out that it was from the belt being too tight. A few adjustments and they went away completely.

If you’re in the market for an under desk treadmill, I highly recommend the CEARTRY one listed above. It’s been well worth the investment.

The listing does say that it can connect to a mobile app, but I was not able to get this to work. It’s not something I care about, so I didn’t bother trying too hard. Anyway, it’s just something to know.
